Dating in America English Vocabulary and Expressions for Dating. I get so many questions from foreigners and ESL students — from Europe, Asia and Latin America — about the concept of dating in America. It wasn’t until I lived in Europe myself that I realized that dating is a uniquely American concept! I’ve created this lesson based on my English language students’В most common questions about dating in America. I’ve included some standard wording below for the typical American dating scenario, where a man asks a woman out on a date. Note that this is just one example.
Dating occurs between people of the same gender, and women do ask men out on dates (although that is still not as traditional or common as the man asking the woman out, which is preferred by the majority of people). How Dating in America is Different.
Dating in America means going out, probably to dinner, with another person with some romantic intention. The difference between American dating and dating in other cultures is that there is no immediate expectation of being exclusive with that person. This means that you can date several people at once! Some people consider this to be sleazy (“trashy”), but modern culture allows it. When do you become exclusive/committed to only each other?
